Tendulkar's 155 on IRC

A new post on the pleasures of cricket via IRC (the Internet Relay Chat) has gone up at Different Strokes. In particular, in this post, I talk about following Tendulkar's epic 155 against the 1998 Australians.

I was a computer novice in the 90's (and still am in many ways) having never touched or used one while I was in India. The first time I ever used one was was during my Master's in Chicago.

I quickly discovered IRC and rec.sport.cricket (which my mind believes eventually morphed into CricInfo). The first inning I "watched" was Brian Lara's 375. Lara's inning that day must have been magnificent, but unencumbered by the actual visuals my mind has conjured up an inning of majestic proportions. Like you, I have never watched highlights of that inning, and probably never will.

I know exactly what you mean in this article! I missed most of the 90's and look on bemusedly when people talk about SRT's dominance in the latter half of that decade. Just as well, he has had a renaissance of sorts in the past couple of years.

The Internet has got to rank right up there among the greatest inventions ever along with the wheel, remote controls, the light bulb and, of course, velcro.

JQ: Sorry for this late response. CI and IRC went hand in hand.

I've seen Lara's 375 on highlights. Great strokes, but otherwise, honestly, not such a big deal.

Without cricket on the net, I would not have survived graduate school.
