Proteas and Aussies

I was just sitting around thinking what a pity it was that South Africa and Australia have never fielded a joint team. (Come to think of it, what a pity that England and Australia have never fielded a joint team - the 'home country' that still contributes the Union Jack to the Australian Flag, and its favorite son, but I digress). The two teams have so much in common; they speak the same language (English; some speak Strine and some speak Afrikaans, but thats only a minor difference); they both like to sledge a lot; they both field well; they both come from a culture that likes rugby (well, in New South Wales they do); they even share a religion (minor denominational differences aside). Frankly, South Africa and Australia have more in common than India and Pakistan (Australia and England have even more in common; why don't they field a common team?). So, I go to thinking, and came up with the following XI. Comments are welcome, but I'm not sure I'll make any changes.

Captain: Hanse Cronje (only a rogue would keep this lot in check)

Wicketkeeper: Ian Healy (only because Warne is in the team: see below)

Allrounder: Shaun Pollock (Australia are good at everything but they can't produce an allrounder)

Pace Bowlers: Alan Donald; Glen McGrath;

Spinners: Shane Warne

Batsmen: Jacques Kallis, Ricky Ponting, (Matthew Hayden and Graeme Smith will open given their intense rapport)

Specialist Fielder: Jonty Rhodes

I challenge you to pick a team to beat that. What a combination. And all that Christian goodness on the ground. Mmmm...makes me want to go watch this team right now.

Coming soon - the Mightiest Anglo-Australian outfit of all time.

I can play any eleven against this team and still win because.....Cronje is the captain :)

Aggghhh! The main problem with this is that Australians and South Africans hate each other. No way could I see this happening. Have a look at uncle j-rod's site to get an idea of the depth of feeling re this issue.

Gana, ill have 500 on who evers player cronje's team.

Samir, Seriously dude, there are so many flaws in this team. Cronje, would get beaten up by Hayden for pretending to be a christian. Grame Smith and Jonty Rhodes are you kidding me. Give me Justin Langer and Andrew Symonds.

This would be my team.

langer
hayden
ponting
kallis
waugh
gilchrist
pollock
warne (c)
gillespie
donald
mcgrath

thats a team.

and just because australia and south africa don't wanna bomb each other doesn't mean our hate isnt as pure as india and pakistans.

Folks, either I need to work on my attempts at humor a bit better, or you need to switch on your detectors. This was a bit of a lark, a bit of a dig at those who would like to make combined India-Pakistan XIs :) I thought the Hayden-Smith pairing was a dead give-away, as was the choice of Cronje as captain (or even the post of "specialist fielder"). I do think Donald and McGrath would make a very good opening attack. I also think Kallis and Waugh might be able to fix this sleeping problem I've been having recently. Now that you've been warned, stick around for the Anglo-Australian XI - those guys really love each other. Remember how Brett Lee and Andrew Flintoff fell in love during the 2005 Ashes? And all those backpackers that inhabit Bondi Beach?

Kallis, Pollock and Donald...can't argue with that one Uncle J. Also identifies the sensitive spots of the Oz.
