The Karthik conundrum

Watching Karthik sitting on the sidelines is a sad reminder that this lad can't seem to arrest his downward slide. How the mighty have fallen. I've always considered him a better bat than Dhoni, thought he would get his wicketkeeping to a point where he'd excel MSD, and even reckoned he was captaincy material. But he's played himself out of the test side (various factors have contributed to this state of affairs, of course), and when given chances in ODI games, hasn't quite seized them. It's a long way from the glory days of 2007.

I am really puzzled how Karthik managed to stay this long at the International level without much energy and drive for the cricket. He is sober, methodical and dull in his approach. It is awkward to compare with MSD to the extent of irrelevancy. I think Karthik plays well in the nets and occasionally in the real match in which he limbers . He lacks guts and panache . Sorry for the strong response , but I am quite disappointed that he is able to pull someones strings at the top. See Uthappa , packed and gone home.

Anon: I think Karthik has certainly gone downhill. But I do think he had some talent to start with!
